CANYON RANCH LIVING
MIAMI BEACH
The Canyon Ranch Living Miami Beach Sales Pavilion is
much more than a place to buy a piece of Miami Beach oceanfront
property – it is a place to explore what the world of
Canyon Ranch Living will be like when it opens in 2005, through
the Sales Pavilion’s interactive Experience Room.
A collaboration between Canyon Ranch and WSG Development Company,
Canyon Ranch Living will be the nation’s first community
dedicated to healthy living. It will be the fulfillment of
Canyon Ranch’s longtime mission to inspire in each person
a commitment to healthy living, and to provide the tools and
knowledge to turn intentions into reality. Residents will
be able to live out this mission on a daily basis at Canyon
Ranch Living in an Arquitectonica-designed development with
Rockwell-designed interiors and public spaces (including spa,
fitness, wellness and dining facilities) that will nurture
the body and spirit.
Four kiosks comprise the Sales Pavilion’s Experience
Room and are designed to educate visitors about the four pillars
that support the Canyon Ranch mission.
The kiosks, which were specially designed by New York architecture
and design firm MOVK, provide a total sensory experience,
giving potential residents a tangible feel of Canyon Ranch
Living’s healthy living philosophy, broken down into
four pillars: Health & Healing, Movement & Fitness,
Nutrition & Abundance and Spa & Meditative.
All kiosks have softly curved walls, helping to facilitate
traffic through the space and creating dynamism. While the
walls are anchored to the floor, their curvature gives the
space a feeling of fluidity, helping the flow of visitors.
Each kiosk also has plasma screen monitors, which provide
two-minute loops of imagery and messaging, designed by MOVK
to relay the mission of Canyon Ranch Living.
The materials used in each kiosk reflect the pillar it represents:
· The Health & Healing kiosk is covered in natural
grass cloth and features an abstracted aloe painting by artist
Carla Weisberg. A floating clear panel is the focal point
of this kiosk with a quote by Dr. Jesse F. Williams: “It’s
of value to think of health as that condition of the individual
that makes possible the highest enjoyment of life,”
a quote that simply and elegantly illustrates the Canyon Ranch
mission. An inset 42” plasma screen sits above a cantilevered
shadowbox display, highlighting some of the integrative
medical offerings that Canyon Ranch Living provides. Four
simple backlit lifestyle photographs complement the other
features of this space.
· The Movement & Fitness kiosk is bold and dynamic,
inspiring physical activity. It features an inset 63”
plasma screen displaying motion media, a stylized rock- climbing
wall with ropes and an inset Wenge wood box shelf displaying
polished chrome dumbbells.
· The Nutrition & Abundance kiosk is sheathed in
quarter-sawn Eucalyptus with dark Wenge accents. Features
in this kiosk illustrate the connection between nature and
nutrition. Plentiful trays of fruits and vegetables sit in
front of sensual titanium glass frosted mirrors that back
recesses in this kiosk. Further illustrating the connection,
a live tree sits beneath an inset 42” plasma screen.
The top shelf of the kiosk is lined with colored bowls, conveying
the warm feeling of familial sharing, and reminding people
that food is a nourishing thing.
· The Spa & Meditative kiosk has a soothing, self-contained
waterfall at its center. The waterfall, a metaphor for change,
provides a soothing visual and aural component to this kiosk,
and reflects traditional spa typologies of water as a restorative
tool. The waterfall base is a simple Zen-inspired smooth rock
bed, which the water trickles through. To the left of the
waterfall is an inset 42” plasma screen presenting soothing
visuals and subtle messaging, looping every two minutes. Walls
of this kiosk are clad in warm, grey horizontal planking.
Soothing, recessed lighting provides a soft glow from the
top of the kiosk and lights the dark Wenge wood cantilevered
bench, which is accented with mohair pillows. The overall
feeling of this kiosk is relaxed, elegant simplicity, allowing
visitors to slow down and leave the exterior world behind
for a while.
Other features of the Sales Pavilion include offices and conference
rooms that all have two large-scale framed photographs of
lifestyle imagery used in the kiosk plasma screen presentations.
This imagery adds beauty to the spaces and also reinforces
Canyon Ranch Living messaging. In the Model Room, a large-scale
model of the completed project is flanked on opposite walls
by nine-foot wide backlit imagery views from the property.
The remaining wall opens up to the beach and ocean beyond.
On opposite ends of the Canyon Ranch Experience room are passageways
to the Rockwell Group-designed hotel suite and condo mock-ups.
These spaces are refuges filled with soothing colors and textures
on comfortable, simply designed furnishings.
Tones of beige, chocolate and terracotta are offset by simple
floral woodblock prints in natural citrus colors and faded
multicolored stripes. The typical sofa is replaced by an oversized
daybed, brimming with over-stuffed cushions for ultimate relaxation.
Multi-function furnishings, such as side tables that double
as laptop computer desks, and upholstered ottomans that serve
as coffee tables and footrests, are found throughout.
The spaces were designed to seem as open as possible, therefore
a translucent
wall separates the living and bedroom areas with a millwork
unit that houses a 42” plasma screen TV on the living
area side and a 20” LCD TV on the bedroom side. The
kitchen also serves as an additional work area with an ample,
low counter/desk area.
The external area of the Sales Pavilion connects the natural
beauty of South Florida to the design of the development.
Sculptural palms interspersed with tall, ethereal columns
of light surround the Pavilion, each emblazoned with descriptive
words that convey the Canyon Ranch philosophy. The Pavilion
itself is clad in slats of wood, reminiscent of the shutters
found in the tropics and ornamented with native “fossil”
limestone and green glass laminated with abstracted graphics
of tropical flora.
